Abigail by Heather Muth: Honourable Mention

| Skill level: Beginner |
The Concept Behind Your Doll: I am an historian, in love with historical fashion. I am also a geek, in love with Star Wars, Star Trek and sci fi. I have taken fashion history at the local university as well as astrophysics. Put these together and you get Abigail.
“Fashion hasn’t changed since the mid 1700s. However technology has marched along at an astounding pace. Abigail is an astronaut and is dressed in the most advanced space suit of the 22nd century. She is clothed in fabrics which are made to protect her in the harsh environments of space and other planets. The high tech materials in her robe à l’anglaise help to regulate her temperature in the coldness of space or the warmth of Mercury. Her large panniers hold and disguise all her essential equipment, such as her rebreather, and battery packs for all her power needs. Her stomacher protects her from dangerous radiation, micrometeorites and has a lifesigns indicator. Her chatelaine has everything she needs for space travel such as her gloves, for when she exits the space ship, a ‘star’ chart in the form of a star, a moon-shaped tricorder, a ray gun, an expanding telescope and, of course, her fan, without which no lady of the court would be.
Abigail’s rocket pack can be strapped to her back and is useful within both the vacuum of space and the atmosphere of any planet and her necklace which looks like any fashionable piece, is her communicator. Her helmet, which is sized to cover her large, powdered wig, has indicators, switches and an oxygen hose.” |
| Describe your doll:Abigail is approximately 10” high by 8” wide and only a couple of inches thick. The doll body includes the skirt shape and except for stitching the two layers of it together she is entirely hand stitched. She was made entirely from items in my stash. Her ‘space age’ fabrics include silver lame, both plain and embossed and a grey satin. Abigail also has ribbons, beads, rickrack, gimp, felt and various findings such as the old earring which is her fan. I made her ray gun (cardboard and beads), telescope (essentially a paper bead) and lifesigns indicator (beads and felt). Her star chart is a button and a grommet. I started her the day that the 2 day challenge was posted on The Magic Bean. This was a fun challenge and I hope you enjoy her as much as I do. |
| The Historical Period You’ve Used:18th century Europe, approximately 1760 or so, when panniers were at their widest and high hairdos were coming into fashion. |
Upper Class Roman Woman by Jeanne White

| Skill level: Intermediate |
| The Concept Behind Your Doll:During the Republican Era (about 500 to 1 BC) of the Roman Empire, instead of the warring and conquest that occurred in our reality, Rome concentrated instead on trade. They did not go to war with Carthage, but traded with them as allies. While there were wars with invaders, Rome and Carthage had each other’s backs, and invaders had little success. |
The Roman empire was not extended much beyond the Mediterranean area, and Europe and England were never conquered.
The Carthaginians were excellent ship builders, and they built vessels that could cross the Atlantic. Carthaginian ships, with Roman and Carthaginian traders, sailed across the Atlantic to the Yucatan Peninsula, which was peopled by the Maya at that time. They brought back jade, avocados, and chocolate, among other things.
They also brought back tales and drawings of the natives that they met. The Roman women were enamored of the tall headdresses, often decorated with feathers that were worn in religious ceremonies. They began to wear tall headdresses, often decorated with the brightly colored feathers from the birds in the Yucatan jungle. These were, of course, very expensive and were a mark of status and wealth.Describe your doll:My own design, this is an upper class married woman. She wears a tunica, the sleeved undergarment, a stolla, the blue sleeveless dress and a dark green palla, which is simply a large oblong of cloth worn in public as a cloak.
She is wealthy enough to be able to afford the brightly colored feathers of jungle birds in her tall headdress, which is styled after those worn by the Mayans in religious ceremonies.
She is a mannequin doll, because I cannot find my colored pencils! The Historical Period You’ve Used:Roman Republican Era, about 500 to 1 BC and the Pre-classic period of the Mayan civilization on the Yucatan Peninsula of Central America.
Origami by Edwina Sutherland: Best Overall Doll

| The Concept Behind Your Doll:During the great Exhibition at the Crystal palace in London in 1851, the Japanese Pavilion drew a lot of attention. The Japanese delegates were similarly enchanted with England and many remained there following the Exhibition. Their influence began to be seen in London fashion, with the wearing of kimono for the boudoir. This fashion began to creep into daily life, along with the following of the Japanese Shinto faith. |
By 1890, the two cultures had become well blended, and this fashion is the result. Origami wears a kimono bodice, with obi and a bustle and a full skirt over her petticoat. Origami is a devotee of Shintoism, revealed here by wearing a completely white outfit. The braid of white hair indicates her devotion. Devotees wear white for one year, as a testament to their faith and dedicationDescribe your doll:My own design, this doll is a fusion of 1890 Victorian fashion and the Japanese aesthetic. The doll has a polymer clay head, hands and feet. The costume is created with crepe paper as homage to the Japanese art of paper folding, origami. The hat is an origami folded shape. 14″ high

| The Concept Behind Your Doll:The renaissance caveman. History shows that prehistoric human progress happened slowly over time… but what if it happened all that once? |

His forehead also has paperclay added to make him look more “primitive”. His eyes are painted buttons with paperclay eyelids. The Historical Period You’ve Used:Prehistoric and the renaissance
The Future Queen by Sharon Matthews: Fairfield’s Best Overall Doll made by a Beginner

| The Concept Behind Your Doll: In a far away future a young woman is set to become queen of an ailing world. There is little natural light and they have evolved to adapt to the failing sun. What they wear has become part of their interface and produces the light they need. Their taste in clothing is flamboyant and reflects the young woman’s liking for history. Her favourite period in time is the Elizabethan, the A Golden Age. |
| Describe your doll: This doll is a modification of a Patti Culea pattern and an Ann Clemens pattern. She is 25″ tall, a cloth body with a clay over cloth head. I’ve used copper wire and glow in the dark paint. I’ve also used a fibre optic hair clip to highlight around her hair. Her shoes are made from clay with a trim around them. Her skirt is made from florist wire wrapped in cloth and painted. |

Moses keeping the Commandments on an iPad by Linda Whitley: Most Imaginative Concept
|
 |
 |
 |
| Skill level: Intermediate |
The Concept Behind Your Doll: Moses needed a faster way to reach more people to tell about the 10 Commandments. He could barely read his own writing when he tried to etch the rules on pieces of stone that kept breaking. So God sent the people technology and the gift of an iPad.
* This was an orginal idea of mine and I had already finished the doll and was looking at costuming on the net when I found someone had photoshoped a photo similar to my doll. |
Describe your doll:
The doll is my original design and the costumes are my own fabrication. The iPad and sandals and staff are made from clay. Moses is about 14 inches tall. His hair and beard are mohair roving. The rest of his costume is made from scraps. I used 3D Crystal Lacquer to make toe nails and finger nails. |

Princess Lydia Stuart by Deborah Robinson: Best Use of Historical Costume Elements by a Doll Street Member

| Skill level: Intermediate |
| The Concept Behind Your Doll: What if Bonny Prince Charlie wasn’t defeated…how would history be changed by the Stuart’s regaining the throne…what would their ancestors dress like knowing their lives would be in constant danger. |
Describe your doll: This doll is based on a pattern by Gloria “Mimi” Winer.
With fame there comes a price. Princess Lydia dresses in battle garb from her hat, which protects her head, her vest embellishment which is in reality chest armor, her kilt which appears as a solid skirt but is made of strips which when parted show her roomy breeches that make ease of motion possible. Lydia also carries weapons for her safety. A sword and dagger are at hand with their holders attached to her motorcycle which shows respect of her heritage by being in the form of a sheep. Lydia’s face paint is the traditional paint worn by her ancestors to frighten their enemies during battle. |
| The Historical Period You’ve Used: April 16, 1746 The Battle of Culloden with Bonny Prince Charlie Stuart as the basis of the old and present day for the new. |
The challenge hostess, Colleen, said that there wasn’t any doll that didn’t win any points at all. Everyone was on the scoreboard and everyone is going to win a prize.
