'Creation' by Penny Hughes

Artist & Designer: Penney Hughes

Title: ‘Creation’

Details: Inspired by the work of Remedios Varo

Creation was inspired from several sources of Varo’s work and her love of the mystical. I have chosen a theme based on an alternative creation story that was once told to me. The summary of the story is the Universe began with a Goddess and when the Goddess saw herself reflected in the mirror of space, she fell in love and the process of creation began. The doll is constructed cloth over wire armature. She is entirely hand sewn.

'The Acrobat' by Deborah Robinson

My doll for AFIC...the artist I used was Chagall..my doll "the acrobat" ......I took various views of his works...made a collage sheet and then incorporated examples of his art into my doll...as in the exagerated body shape..a faery ...a clock...patchwork bird...bright vibrant colors...and continued on with the theme with my display stand....created to look like a circus tent....inside the tent I decopaged circus "posters" to give it a more authentic feel. I designed the doll myself...and also designed her garment..to appear like a leotard the clothes are actually part of the body and not loose clothing..I used felt for the "slippers" which are also attached to the foot........the fairy was a challenge for me due to the very small size....I wanted it to have a personality all its own...I stitched it onto the shoulder in an impish pose.

I create handcrafted cloth art dolls..I handsew the dolls and their garments..I needlesculpt and handpaint the faces and I wired them for posability..I use vintage materials ....this guarantees that my creations are one of a kind and have their own personality....I try to be consistant with my sculpted faces however the dolls decide what they will look like so they all are unique!

'Last Night I dreamed' by Edwina Sutherland

Title: Last night I dreamed"
Artist: Chagall.

I chose to interpret a song by Tragically Hip "Last night I dreamed you didn't love me." I was drawn to the lyrics, which sang of the fear of losing love, while one's partner sleeps peacefully by one's side. Chagall was big into dreams in his works, so I thought it appropriate.
