Lady Bug pin doll pattern

This tutorial is brought to you by Ute Vasina, ©1999.

Stuff you need:

Standard sewing supplies
4" x 4" piece of tight woven muslin
Stuffing
Wire for antennas (optional)
Paint brush
Gesso
Red, black, & pink acrylic paint
Pin back

NOTE: YOUR TRACING LINES ARE ALSO YOUR SEWING LINES.

  • Trace your pattern to make a template.  Trace "ladybug" onto fabric, sew and carefully cut out (1/8" or closer). Be sure to clip inside the curves. Turn and stuff softly.

  • Close the opening and you should now have what will soon be a "ladybug."  Begin needle sculpting your ladybug where you see the dotted lines, working from front to back.

  • Now you are ready to paint.  Paint ONE coat Gesso onto both sides, being sure to cover your material completely.  Make sure your coat of Gesso is completey dry before applying any other paint.  Now, you're ready to begin painting color to your bug.

  • COLORS:  The white part of the wings should be painted red. Body, arms, legs and the spots are black.  Face: give your bug some character and make the face as you like.  I like to paint mine with a pink acrylic, which makes it stand out.

  • OPTIONAL:  You may paint both sides of your ladybug, but it's not necessary.  Paint the back all red or back.  Antennas are also optional. I find it easier to leave them off, but if you like, include them.  Simple wire will do.
